St. Barbara is the patron saint of miners.

A miner's prayer is found in de res Metallica
by Georgius Agricola. (1455)

" Oh Sancta Barbara, our divine protection
against accident, we who labour far from
light of day, in the stygian bowels of the
dank earth, do beseech thee. Grant us by thy
pure grace, that by the time we hit the next
shear zone, the promoter who fronts this lousy
hole in the ground will have raised enough
money for us to get paid"

Amen.

UPDATE 1-Barrick gold output 480,592 ounces in January

2/21/2002 6:52:57 PM

(Recasts throughout to add background. Figures in U.S. dollars unless noted)

TORONTO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Gold miner Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) , in a one-time report required under a merger deal with U.S. rival Homestake, said on Thursday it produced as expected 480,592 ounces of gold in January.

For the one-month period ended Jan. 31, Barrick said net income was $9 million, or 2 cents a share, with gold sales at 300,449 ounces. The report of 31 days includes combined operations for both Barrick and Homestake, whose merger was completed on Dec. 14 last year.

The world's second-largest gold producer said it had deferred delivery of 37 percent of its lower-cost production to early February, which would be reflected in income in first-quarter results.

The company expects to produce 5.7 million ounces of gold at cash costs of $167 an ounce this year.

"The results include all ordinary and recurring adjustments to represent fairly the combined operations for the month," Barrick said in a statement.

Barrick shares closed up C$1.51 at C$29.75 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday.
