Once a sovereign country commits itself to war, they must be willing to accept the consequences of that commitment

Then how can we, as a country that has committed itself to "war" all over the globe over the past 50 years (Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc etc etc), claim we are exempt from the constraints of the UN?

Because we won?

States rights was a valid cause. It is unfortunate that the right to maintain slaves, obviously wrong, was the right that the civil war was fought over.
