I have a question on AWE.

Does anyone know how they are switching their subs from TDMA to GSM? Any subsidies? Handset issues? Tri-mode? GPRS? If I am a new subscriber to AWE, would I be using a GSM or TDMA handset?

I looked at their website and can't really figure out the different plans in relationship to technology.

The "establishment", traditional view of phone co. operations is that assets are the most important thing. Remember, that in the past regulated phone cos were allowed a percentage of profit on invested assets. Thus, spectrum ownership is the important thing. Efficiency of use of that spectrum is not that important. The second assumptioin is that market share means market strength and that marketing can overcome technical deficiencies. In other words, the company that has the most spectrum--even if it hogs it--and has marketing strength can overcome more technically advanced and efficient competitors. In this light, the Barron's article can be understood.
