It happened at most tech/dot.com firms during the bubble. infospace, ebay, yahoo, amazon.. they all "purchased" worthless startups consisting of 1 employee and a biz plan.

the only common thread was that a sand-hill VC firm inevitably had made a large investment in those worthless firms several weeks before the large public company "bought" them.. and the board of directors at the large public company approving/pushing the deals were ALWAYS members of the VC firm that just invested in the startup.

total, complete, fleecing of the public. everyone knew it was going on, but everyone was too busy getting stinking rich. sound familiar?
