We don't need that kind of protection and our citizens will not put up with armed military patrolling civilian areas." Last weekend I took a trip and saw some of out National Guardsman stationed at the airport check points with large rifles in hand. I again thought about the foreign trips and about my children asking why they had guns at the airports in those countries. The answers then seem silly now. Fortunately, the kids were not on this trip. Frankly, it pisses me off. The additional security is marginal, at best. The terrorists accomplished some of their goals. They made a material change in my freedom. My country now has armed military at its airports even though their presence would have done nothing to change September 11th. I am almost as angry at the supposed leaders in my government that have reacted and overreacted in ways that placed political currency above meaningful safety and security. September 11th was, without question or qualification, tragic. The apparently permanent reductions in personal freedoms following September 11th have been equally as tragic. While I completely agree that "[a]s with all things, an ounce of prevention would have been worth a pound of cure," the armed military in our airports and the personal freedoms forfeited after September 11th are neither preventive nor curative, IMO. Tom, amen to all that. I will see with my own eyes later this summer. Still deeply saddened by the losses there in NYC. If you weren't aware, there will be a documentary showing on March 10 which centers around film footage that was taken from INSIDE the World Trade Center by I believe some French film makers who were coincidentaly following fire fighters that day. Many of the subjects in the film never survived, and the film makers barely made it out. Peter
