John, I don't think Intel will have a truly new desktop core until 2010 or so. Didn't they say that the P4 will take them to 10Ghz by then or something to that effect? Prescott will be a beefed up P4 ( another shrink and more cache probably ). I think at some point the P4 will have enough cache that it will make up for the lousy design. I think Intel designed the long pipeline with that in mind. That it will be fed quickly enough that it won't matter that it has to deal with bubble latencies.

Undoubtedly, Prescott is the next version x86, eighth generation processor from Intel, since we never heard of it until now.

Never heard of Prescott???

Heck, we even know the code name of Prescott's successor. (Tejas).

What if I told you I could dig up references to Prescott on this very thread from something like a year and a half ago? ;-)

Return of the Son of Willamette
By: Andrew Thomas

Intel's 479 pin son of Willamette, due for launch next year, now has its very
own codename, Prescott. A die shrink from 0.18 to 0.13 micron, Prescott
and its associated Tulloch chipset are expected to support both synchronous
and Rambus memory. ®

Oops. At that point, Rambus will no longer be our friend. This is just the Register, of course, and the "son of Willy" rumors have been scoffed at by the official Intel FUD disseminators, but this bears watching.

Cheers, Dan.

There's also a ~ 6 month old claim by Anand that Presctott will feature an 800MHz FSB and Tejas 1.2GHz FSB.
