I agree with most of your last post, although for the life of me I can't see how you could prefer Belgium to anything- ng Nothing against the people, but I've spent a good amount time there too, and found it so Euro-bland (must be all those Euro-institutions clogging up the local culture)..
did enjoy the mussels in the r months though...

Your facts are right about individual Americans being most generous on earth, but gvt. not (% wise)..

Lived in Australia, never got to New Zealand, but can only imagine how special a place it is...

Finally, there are really many "Americas", but one big dividing line was easily found on election night, if you happened to see red (Gore) blue (Bush) voting patterns..the old rural/urban thing found around the world....in one major way, life has gotten a lot better in the States over the past decade- you can now get anywhere, anytime good foreign cuisine/dish/wine/etc (even in local supermarket) in even the most modest of cities.....and who says immigration doesn't have its benefits? (just kidding)..actually, I think all those summer trips to Europe finally awoke the American pallet sometime back..
