Ciena believes it will speed up its return to profitability. Fewer competitors in a slumping industry has to be considered good, on an incremental basis.
Now if JDSU/GLW or JNPR/CSCO/NT/LU did deals with no premiums, the market would take them as positive, imho.

You could be right that this one alone may not be enough.

After a 3 day break, we must be due for a major surge of deals soon....not necessarily in tech, which is my least favorite sector. It just can't stay this quiet for that long, or can it?
Can Tyco really have that big of an effect on M and A activity? That is, companies are afraid to do deals and stay away from having to account for acquisitions.
