Combjelly, Re: "Do you know of any of that IP that is exclusive?"

The better question, maybe, is do you know that they didn't? While I'm sure an argument could be made either way, I'd find it very hard to believe that Intel walked away from a deal like that without any exclusive IP. At the very least, they brought with them the patents owned by the engineers, which I'm sure isn't trivial.

Re: "and I suspect that they have their own answer for SMT"

At Microprocessor Forum, Fred Webber said that the K8 was designed both with multithreading and multicore in mind, but that there was no plan for either at the moment. My guess is that AMD will plan to implement these features during the next Hammer iteration (probably 2004 time frame). By then, I assume that Intel will have gained a lot of support for Hyperthreading, so AMD will have to make sure that their technology can stand alone without much software support.

But who knows what the future will bring?

To a high level of certainty we can say that the future will bring more Intel profits and more AMD losses.
