Japan's versatile mobile phones are competing with wristwatches

TOKYO, Japan -- The humble wristwatch is the latest device to face competition from Japanese mobile phones, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper.

The daily quoted a survey by Japanese watchmaker Citizen as showing that watches are losing popularity among adults who prefer to check the time on their phones.

The study, surveying 330 adults in June and July, showed that each Japanese on average owns 3.7 wristwatches -- down by 0.2 from the previous survey in 1999.

Japanese also have a penchant for luxury Swiss wristwatches, according to the study, which showed that 40.6 percent of respondents owned a watch worth more than 100,000 yen ($852) and 26.7 percent owned a Swiss watch.

An official at Citizen told the paper that Swiss products had gained popularity in Japan due to their status as luxury goods.

Japan's mobile phones are seen as some of the most advanced in the world, with Internet connections and camera phones proving particularly popular.

Similarly, Japanese watches are known for their extra features.

Casio has manufactured wristwatches with digital cameras, MP3 players, and even a GPS locator.

However, the survey found that 73 percent of respondents found such features unnecessary, preferring wristwatches for their original function -- telling time -- rather than extra features.
