Another reason for Palomino delay was that it first taped out as Mustang and then the marketing woke up and discovered that there were no market for a beefed up server part, instead that there was a screaming need for a slimmed down notebook part. They were right, except about a year late with the insight.

There is always need for desktop chips. If Mustang was ready on schedule (Q4 2000?) why couldn't AMD sell it, or a scaled down version (less L2) as desktop chip?
