The scheme was proposed last year, at 3GSM. The pieces of the puzzle have now apparently materialized.

Any thoughts (Engineer or MightyLakers?) if they could similarly overlay TDMA networks? Would the core network for TDMA still be usable to support 1X, in the same way that the GSM/GPRS core network is proposed for 1X? Just add the CDMA 1X air interface alongside existing TDMA?

Ben-- thanks for your comment about synchronous WCDMA; J-Phone would indeed be a likely target, given the Vod connection, and the fact that they probably see first hand what DoCoMo is going through. Still, I'm hoping KDDI's 1X deployment outshines both.
