It's all a matter of overpopulation, living too close together, getting in each other's way...

Do you remember a few years ago there was a very rich guy in New Jersey who bought a huge house and then built a regulation-size baseball field on his property, complete with lights and small grandstand? He invited disadvantaged kids to form teams and play on his field, day and night. That was well-intentioned and all for the good, except that he had an older couple as a neighbor, and they felt their lives were being ruined by all the noise and commotion. I think it was on Sixty Minutes that the couple was showing their huge collection of balls that had been hit onto their property, into their treasured gardens. It went to court, and I believe the judge tried to reach a compromise based on limiting the times when games could be staged.

We don't seem to be able any longer to work out these conflicts without clogging the courts with them. Maybe this is also due to our Balkanization into endless sub-groups with differing values and customs, all trying to coexist in close proximity. In many towns around here, there are on-going conflicts pitting young parents against senior citizens on the issue of raising taxes to support schools. It's very difficult to get either group to respect the view of the other, let alone to find some compromise.

It is all very regrettable, as you say. It's too bad the whole world can't be like SI, where everyone gets along so well (multiple g's!).
