Yes it is. I've had actual experience in porting stuff between architectures under Linux, mostly lower level and driver code. Linux does a good job of abstracting the hardware so that the details are taken care of at the kernel level.

As far as a commitment, did you see who is doing the x86-64 port to Linux for AMD? I think they have a stake. As far as anyone else, all that really exists right now is the emulator. While that is good as a start, there needs to be actual hardware available before you see much action. Admittedly, Intel got a lot of announcements when they were paying companies to do a port to Itanium, but how many actual packages are available, as opposed to being announced? I have noted that one reason given for the lack of Itanium sales is that there is little software available...
