Well, a high salary for an employee is better than the equivalent pay of a contractor. The reason is that the company typically has to pay about 30-50% more on top of the salary for things like benefits and insurance subsidies. In addition, they pay the other half of your social security taxes. If you are a consultant on your own, then you have to pay all of your own benefits plus all of the social security tab. So your net is much lower. Plus, contractors are the first to go when there is a downturn. On the whole, I'd rather be an employee, but I'd rather have a higher salary than a fist full of options.
