A famous journalist, Walter Duranty, minimized the figures and the responsibility of the Communists at the time. His editors at the New York Times began to wonder about his accuracy, but it merely became a matter of controversy. Duranty admitted to several people privately that the death toll probably exceeded ten thousand. The most reliable account came in the '80s in a book by Robert Conquest, called "Harvest of Sorrow", which was later mostly confirmed by Russian sources.
