fingolfen, back in the old days IBM wanted alternate sources and was able to mediate a deal. All those patents from ca 1982 are retired now. Some time later in the 386 era Intel was badgered into an agreement by the government that allowed AMD to live as long as they signed an agreement. Soon the AMD 386 was better than Intels. same with the 486, so Intel has been trying to make their parts sole sourced for quite a while noww and AMD has been trying to make workaalikes. Remember when they all used the same socket? then the slot came out and AMD was forced into the alpha bus since Intel owned the other one that the P-2/3/4 used, and still does.
Ever since then Intel has had a physical monopoly since AMD could not make a pin for pin replacement for the P--2/3/4
Yes AMD had made workalikes that are as good as the intel parts by many measures and not as good by some, but still they are a powerful competitor and intel does not have unfettered pricing ability, lest they lose share hand over fist.
As for numbers of patents, ask paul.
