Wincor Nixdorf, Sun Microsystems Sign Partnership Agreement

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 2002--

Wincor Now Authorized as Sun Reseller for the Retail Market;
Agreement Furthers Relationship Between Industry Leaders
Wincor Nixdorf Inc., the leader in the delivery of open systems solutions to the retail and banking industries, today announced that it has been authorized by Sun(tm) Microsystems Inc. as a Global Solutions Provider (GSP) under Sun's iForce Reseller Program.

This allows Wincor to offer Sun server products and services to North America's leading retailers as part of a complete solution that substantially lowers the costs of acquiring, managing and maintaining retail store systems. Working together, Wincor and Sun will actively promote their partnership and products to the retail community.

Designed to customer specifications, the Wincor-Sun solution includes a Java-enabled point-of-sale (JavaPOS) system from Wincor's BEETLE family of POS appliances at the point of service, combined with a Sun Netra(tm) or Cobalt(tm) server in the back office. The solution, which can be delivered in Linux or Solaris, can be deployed on any scale and in a wide range of thin and thick client configurations. The combined power of Wincor and Sun technology provides retailers with an integrated solution that meets today's most important requirements for retail systems: freedom-of-choice, ease-of-use, high reliability, exceptional price/performance, and simple maintenance.

A choice of Java-based POS applications software -- meeting retail requirements such as general merchandise, c-store, grocery and more -- is available through Wincor's network of leading independent software vendors. Because of Wincor's industry-leading support for the Association of Retail Technology Standards' JavaPOS device drive, numerous retail peripheral options are also available. Wincor rounds out its retail offering with consulting, project management, integration, and support services.

"Wincor Nixdorf shares Sun's deep commitment to industry standards, and now Wincor can deliver standards-based, best-of-breed store solutions for the front and back end," said Jeff Soisson, president and CEO of Wincor Nixdorf USA. "Wincor's philosophy is to offer retailers the very best in open systems, and our partnership with Sun exemplifies this."

"The retail industry has embraced Sun's Java programming language, and Wincor continues to lead the retail industry with its unmatched support for the JavaPOS standard," said Bob DeLaney, director of World Wide Industry Solutions for Sun. "The relationship between Wincor and Sun is an important partnership to help drive industry standards, and retailers will be the real winners."

Retailers can get a first-hand look at the new Wincor-Sun offering at Sun's iForce Ready Center in Menlo Park, Calif. On display is a reference architecture that combines a Wincor Nixdorf BEETLE NetPOS thin-client terminal running ADS Retail's Nextor POS application, powered by a Sun Cobalt server appliance. Known as SmartClient, the architecture on display is a recommended solution for zero-maintenance, thin-client POS. The SmartClient solution architecture serves as a guide for retailers to select appropriate servers, terminals, and software according to their unique requirements. Additional reference architectures are planned in the near future.

Sun offers the scalability to ensure retailers can meet the extreme load demands they experience in seasonal peaks throughout the year.
