Favorable [deluded] Itanium revue at RealWorldTech

Also goes into detail on EV8. EV8 is notable because the next thing Dirk architected was Athlon, and the team that stayed behind to work on EV8 has now gone on to Intel - so EV8 may point to what AMD will soon release and what Intel will eventually release.

Given that Dirk's team set up EV8 to be not 2-way, but 4-way SMT, it seems likely that his follow on high end effort will also support SMT. So there is a very good chance that Clawhammer will support SMT, and Sledgehammer will be dual core SMT and will present 4 virtual processors to the OS (just as EV8 was going to).

In fact, dual cores issuing 3 instructions each per clock results in a processor of the same scale as EV8's single core that issues 6 instructions per clock. A 32 processor Sledgehammer system will issue up to 192 instructions per clock.

EV8 looks so much better than Itanium, that it seems possible, if not necessarily likely, that Intel will produce an EV8 variant to replace Itanium.
