"Our newest 980nm pump lasers are extensively qualified across our customer base, covering more than a dozen amplifier programs," said David Bean, Corning Lasertron product manager. "This milestone, combined with our new precision etch process, provides us with the yields, flexibility and product performance to be the most efficient and reliable 980nm pump manufacturer in the industry." Optilock(TM) wavelengthstabilized 980nm pumps incorporate the latest CLT2.2 chip technology with Corning Lasertron's fourth generation package known as the Gibraltar 2. This combination offers operating powers up to 250mW with outstanding optical performance and reliability. Corning Lasertron also has significantly enhanced the performance of its pump laser chips with a new precision etch process. "The new process increases our chip powers by 30percent, on average, while increasing chip power efficiencies by more than 10percent," said Bean. "The improvement, originally designed to achieve significantly higher yields, also injects outstanding consistency into our process, thereby increasing all performance measures." Corning Lasertron semiconductor scientists in Bedford, Massachusetts developed the precision etch process during the past 12 months. The process was fully qualified in conjunction with the CLT2.2 980nm pump chip, and has logged over 1.5 million device hours in reliability testing. "Corning Lasertron now is able to combine the leadingedge performance of the CTL2.2 pump chip with the advanced process consistency, reliability, and optical performance enabled by the precision etch process," Bean said. Pump lasers are deployed in optical amplifiers for major long haul and metropolitan market telecommunication networks.
