I don't know why we are arguing this point but I thought you said something like the rep. should vote his/her conscious and not be a slave to the polls. The rep can behave in that fashion; unfortunately the rep. has a responsibility to his/her constituents. If the rep runs on a pro union ticket and wins and then votes anti union throughout his/her term because his/her conscious dictates, the rep is not likely to be reelected.

I think the rep should vote his conscious (unless it is not a matter of major principle to him and the district he represents does strongly tilt one way on the issue), but he should also campaign on his conscious. If a rep is pro-gun control and lives in a district that is against gun control he should not campaign on a 2nd amendment rights platform and then vote for gun control. However if he does say that he believes in gun control and gets voted in anyway then he should support what he believes in rather then taking a poll every time an big vote comes to the floor.
