It was convenient to go along with that - America likes to meddle in foreign places militarily and then leave things a mess. If we want security we must not let cess pools develop, particularly ones that are as clearly defined as the situation was in Afghanistan. The US could have sponsored efforts through the U.N. and other groups to aide the country . . if not for our own self preservation but for humanitarian reasons. But that wouldn't have benefited the military industrial complex so there was little political juice in it - just good common sense.
