SEOUL, Feb 20 (Reuters) - South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co is not considering an alliance with troubled rival Hynix Semiconductor Inc <00660.KS>, the company said on Wednesday in response to an idea suggested by the country's commerce minister.

"We have not considered and are not planning an alliance with Hynix," Samsung spokesman Han T.S. told Reuters.

Commerce Minister Shin Kook-hwan earlier told reporters the two company's should consider an alliance.

"Cooperation and a tie-up between Samsung and Hynix would contribute to Korea's chip industry," he said ahead of a breakfast meeting with the chief executives of Hynix and Samsung.

Hynix is locked in complex negotiations with Micron Technology Inc (nyse: MU - news - people) of the United States to sell key assets in a deal that could be worth $4 billion.
