Cisco Is Said to Win a Huge I.B.M. Order By BLOOMBERG NEWS February 20, 2002 nytimes.com SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 19 (Bloomberg News) — Cisco Systems (news/quote), the largest maker of computer-networking equipment, won an order worth $300 million to $500 million to upgrade I.B.M.'s internal network, an analyst said today. Cisco will replace I.B.M.'s technology, known as Token Ring, with equipment based on the Ethernet standard that is the most widely used in office networks, the analyst, Nikos Theodosopoulos, of UBS Warburg, wrote in a research note. He did not cite a source. Spokesmen for Cisco and I.B.M. (news/quote) declined to comment. In 1999, I.B.M. conceded defeat to Cisco in the networking-equipment market, agreeing to sell Cisco patents for its networking products in exchange for contracts to supply Cisco with chips, parts and services. Cisco became I.B.M.'s chief network supplier in a $3 billion five-year agreement.
