It is a kind of compact that we have, to maintain civic peace, to interfere with childrearing as little as possible, construing abuse narrowly, and favoring the family unit. Similarly, "Heather Has Two Mommies" directly impinges on sincere belief in a way that is not symmetrical: not discussing lesbianism is not the same as putting it down. Thus, I do not think that one has moral equivalence in the two cases, even if I think the fights over creationism are not really worth it. PETA, which is known for its vandalism ("direct action") is widely admired among liberals, whereas Operation Rescue, also known for direct action, is somewhat disreputable among most conservatives. Environmentalists have been, for years, primarily acting as preservationists. Although there remains some concern for bread and butter issues, like water quality, a lot of money has been diverted to locking away land primarily for aesthetic reasons, taking a hardline against multiple use or development, expropriating land or tying up projects due to listed species being somewhere in the vicinity, or wetlands being alleged. One commercial project near me was delayed by about a year due to a wet land dispute. It turned out it was a gully, dry most of the year, that harbored little more than misquitoes. There is nothing comparable among conservative causes. I am having difficulty seeing both sides as equally implicated in the complaint. Perhaps you can help me think of some things I have overlooked.......
