How so. If a candidate agrees to play the game, he must abide by the rules of the game.

The new campaign finance law covers more then just candidates, or even their parties. It doesn't just cover people who are in the game.

Also I think your idea would discourage political debate and discussion by candidates, and would be a mess to enforce. Even when limited to just the candidates I would be strongly against your idea. Its one thing to promote the idea of respectfulness and honesty, its another thing when every statement by a candidate can open them up to lawsuits or criminal prosecution. If you want more polite honest politicians then don't vote for those who are impolite and/or dishonest and try to convince other people to follow your lead. I have no problem with that but I do have a problem with trying to impose the regulations you are supporting.
