library.northernlight.com

PARIS (AFX) - Siemens AG said it will announce a technical partnership for the development of UMTS handsets at the CeBIT technology fair in Germany in March or later.

The company also said it is targeting 40-50 pct of GPRS handset market by end-2003, commenting that stocks were "minimal" at the beginning of 2002.

Talks with the partner are "progressing well" but no merger of mobile phone operations is planned, chairman of Siemens handsets, Peter Zapf said, cited in French business daily, Les Echos.

Siemens said it expects to be number three in global mobile sales in full-year 2001 and expects to raise its market share of all phones to 10 pct by end-2003 from from 8 pct at present.

He said Siemens handsets targets an operating margin of 8 pct by Sept 2003.
