Ciena-ONI Deal Sounds Like Win-Win

Ciena's (NasdaqNM:CIEN - news) steal -- I mean purchase -- of ONI Systems (NasdaqNM:ONIS - news) on Monday left the combined companies in a much better position to weather the ongoing (but lifting) telecom-equipment depression. Ciena's good customer base and synergistic product lines, when combined with ONI's industry-best metro optical platform, make the combined companies quite compelling here.

Several months ago I wrote that Tellabs (NasdaqNM:TLAB - news) was shopping for an acquisition, then noted later that Tellabs finally made its purchase . But since then, I haven't seen or heard much on the consolidation front for telecom-equipment vendors. With sources telling me that Cisco (NasdaqNM:CSCO - news) is sniffing around a little bit here and there, I've had my ear low to the ground, expecting to hear of more acquisitive actions in the telecom-equipment vendor world. ...
