Compaq Server Unit May Be Key to Hewlett Purchase, WSJ Says
By J. Kyle Foster

Houston, Feb. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp.'s NonStop server unit may be key to winning stockholder approval for Hewlett-Packard Co.'s $21.6 billion purchase of the company, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The two companies see NonStop's focus on knitting together software, hardware and applications programs as applicable to other parts of their business. A recent sale to Sabre Holdings Corp. exemplifies what Compaq and Hewlett-Packard hope to do together, the Journal said.

NonStop is the only division in either Compaq or Hewlett- Packard that has successfully sold whole packages of hardware and software designed to meet specific customer needs, the Journal said.

Compaq's five-year, $100 million agreement to install its servers in Sabre's reservation system replaced mainframes from International Business Machines Corp. The sale helped NonStop broaden its customer base, the Journal said.
