Hitachi to Launch New Broadband Mobile Multimedia Communicator NPD-10JWL in Japan Market

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 2002-- Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT - news; TSE:6501) today announced it is launching a new category of mobile multimedia communicator, the NPD-10JWL, based on the new Microsoft® operating system (OS), Windows CE .NET, Japanese Version, and the new Intel® Central Processing Unit (CPU), Intel® PXA250 applications processor based on the Intel® Xscale(TM) microarchitecture. Hitachi will begin selling the new device at the end of April 2002 in the Japan market.

In making the announcement, Shigeru Matsuoka, President & CEO, Net-PDA Venture Company, Hitachi, Ltd. said, ``We are targeting this device to the enterprise customer, so we have assured enterprise-level security, rich connectivity, and wireless networking functionality, employing Windows CE .NET. Incorporating the .NET Compact Framework into our device will enable our enterprise customers to easily use the same applications for PCs, servers and Web services. We believe that wireless capability is becoming increasingly vital to businesses and other organizations that will need to have related personnel or groups of employees who are wirelessly tethered to critical enterprise applications in an entirely seamless, secure and mobile environment. We developed this new device to be able to accommodate broadband content such as video audio streaming and other rich content information. Wireless LAN infrastructure for mobile devices is the next important application for the enterprise using both wireless enterprise LANs and Hotspot methodologies. We estimate that the mobile needs of the enterprise will result in significant growth in this new and important area.''

Hitachi's NPD-10JWL will be equipped with built-in 802.11b wireless LAN, based on Windows CE .NET as a real time operating system and the Intel PXA250 applications processor as a leading performing, lowest power processor.

``As the enterprise begins integrating wireless technologies, a new class of high performance low power clients will be required,'' said Peter Green, general manager of Intel's Handheld Computing Division. ``Hitachi's NPD-10JWL is another example of how products based on the Intel PXA250 applications processor and WindowsCE .NET, will power a whole new class of business device that will enable better security, access data faster and accelerate business applications.''

``Businesses are looking for smart, secure Windows Powered handhelds that can be seamlessly integrated into existing IT infrastructures,'' said Todd Warren, general manager, Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corp. ``Hitachi's Windows CE .NET-based NPD-10JWL will deliver on this demand, providing mobile workers with a feature-rich wireless device that will enable them to maintain access to essential business applications.''
