Pete: I think you have it backwards. More and more server backend are becoming clusters because they solve those higher priority reasons better.

IBM would disagree with you ;-)

And I have to say, that the massive servers we have (not quite what I'd call a "mainframe" in todays terminology), have been significantly less of a problem to maintain.

MMPs (always cluster based) are still the top performing machines in any SC class listing.

Not all tasks are easily distributed amongst nodes in a cluster. And you almost always have to do the software yourself (generally, that's a reliability hit right there). You also lose out on the "Quality of Service and Support" - on the software side (which is not insignificant).

5. Compatibility with existing systems

This is actually the same, unless you are clustering existing systems and maybe adding more new nodes. Then the advantage goes 100% to clustering.

Uhmmm... NO! Compatibility is zero. You need to start from scratch, doing everything yourself. There are very few applications available that will work on a cluster out of the box.
