Ahhh, UltraEdit. Definitely my favorite Windows editor. It recently replaced Professional File Editor (PFE) as my editor of choice.

But I still am not sure if it can find and
replace non-printable characters...

Yes, it can - search by HEX instead of ASCII ;-)

(you need to be in HEX mode)

That's also one of my favorite text editors for Windows. Highly recommended IMO.
