Middletown, New York, Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Mediacom Communications Corp., the largest U.S. cable-television company serving only rural areas, had a wider fourth-quarter loss than analysts had forecast because acquisitions raised expenses.

The eight-biggest U.S. cable operator's loss was $88.3 million, or 74 cents a share, from $53.9 million, or 60 cents, in the year-earlier period. Sales more than doubled to $213.6 million from $87.5 million, Mediacom said in a statement.

The company paid $2.1 billion last year for cable systems from AT&T Corp., the largest U.S. provider. Mediacom's depreciation and amortization, which include writing off costs of purchases and upgrading cable lines for Internet and digital-TV service, more than doubled to $117.3 million from $49.1 million.
