Brooks Automation Inc. has completed its acquisition of Intelligent Automation Systems Inc. for about $17.9 million, in both stock and cash. The two Massachusetts-based companies have an 8-year-old business relationship.

Brooks acquired the 14-year-old custom automation company to expand its portfolio for the semiconductor, photonics and life sciences industries.

"The acquisition of Intelligent Automation Systems allows Brooks Automation to gain strategic automation technology and strong engineering capabilities that complement our core business," said Robert J. Therrien, Brooks’ president and CEO, in a statement. "Along with a top notch engineering team, we are acquiring valuable learning cycles, particularly in the area of machine vision. Their knowledge combined with our technology crossover provides the potential entry point to a broader base of growth industries, including automation for fiber optics - where there is still a lot of manual assembly - and the life sciences."

Industry analysts expect the emerging communications market of photonics to grow rapidly over the next few years, with companies outsourcing production of their next-generation products.
