Japan's post offices 'give special delivery to gangsters' letters'

Officials say many of Japan's post offices give gangsters special delivery service at no extra cost.

A Postal Services Agency spokesman says 344 post offices give the preferential treatment to criminals.

Officials found they put gangsters' mail in special bags marked 'handle with care', or 'violent gang'. They have been told to stop.

Agency spokesperson Takumi Miwa told the Mainichi Daily News: "There must have been some pressure, given the nature of these gangs. We feel that the post offices were doing this to have their operations run smoothly."

The survey of 5,000 post offices found that in 40 of Japan's 47 prefectures mail is regularly put in the special bags.

The spokesperson added: "Whether this special treatment was illegal or not is not clear, but the issue is fairness as everyone who pays the same rate should get equal treatment."
