What earnings? Real earnings? Who knows which is which? With the confidence and trust at a low ebb, no one will buy anything major, except a house to hide out in, a car to get away in, defense goods to keep from getting Anthrax and radiation poisoning. That makes for a piss-poor economy. Fear causes everyone to hunker down and wait it out. We won't have real business expansion without confidence in the honesty of out leaders and the rule of law. The PE ratios of stocks in countries like Mexico are zip, because no one believes even the profitable companies. And they're right.
