Elmer - well, since I had the pleasure of working on that particular piece of code, I can correct your recollection. Win386 provided a full 32 bit memory model and supported 32 bit drivers. However, the use of the virtual86 mode was the thing that caught people's attention, since it did support multiple sessions. For a long time, the only 32 bit drivers were Compaq's own, and the fact that 32 bit code only ran on Compaq 386 machines meant that few developers were interested in taking advantage of the features. So the legacy of the 286 meant that the 32 bit Windows was more of a curiosity than an important OS, aside from its ability to run 16 bit code more robustly.
