San Jose, California, Feb. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Xilinx Inc., the biggest maker of programmable semiconductors, said fiscal fourth- quarter sales will increase 10 percent from last quarter. The shares rose as much as 6.7 percent in after-hours trading.

The company forecast last month that sales would increase in the low single digits in the quarter ending in March from fiscal third-quarter sales of $228.1 million, spokeswoman Lori Owen said.

Chips by Xilinx and rival Altera Corp. can be customized with software in prototypes or in installed products. Xilinx's inventories are expected to decline to 100 days this quarter from 131 days in the prior period, the company said. Sales to storage and computer-networking equipment companies and to wireless telecommunication companies have improved, Xilinx said.

``Given Xilinx's leadership position and status, this is a very positive sign for an upturn in the semiconductor industry,'' said James Liang, a Pacific Growth Equities analyst, who rates the shares ``buy'' and doesn't own them.
