CHICAGO (Reuters) - Optical networking company Ciena Corp. (CIEN) on Thursday posted a record quarterly operating loss due to the spending slump in telecommunications and warned April quarter results will lag expectations due to further reductions in orders.

Ciena shares closed down about 12.6 percent at a three-year low on the Nasdaq.

Two important customers, which Ciena did not identify, told the supplier in the last few days that they may purchase significantly less than previously indicated. As a result, Ciena now expects revenues of about $100 million for the second quarter ending in April, below the $148.5 million analysts were expecting, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.
