Who cares if they are impaired investments? Qualcomm has already made substantial restructuring charges the past 2 quarters for those investments. Vesper looks like Leap with subs growing from 400,000 to over 1 million this year. Pegaso is likely to turn up a few more customers this year too. S&P is getting ready to raise the bond ratings for Mexico this year. Things in emerging markets are getting much better as things in the US sit and spin.

Would you rather have Qualcomm leave all their money in cash to count and earn 1.75% money market rates? I expect them to use the cash to promote the development of the companies deploying CDMA networks. Reliance, KT Freetel, and Leap are stellar positions. I wish Qualcomm could pick up a significant piece of Sprint PCS right now to help things out.

QCOM is in a wonderful position now that CDMA is going into every major geographical segment of the world. QCOM has finally matured from a 3 market company - Korea, Japan, and the US.

3 years ago when this stock was 200, people were banking on the future success of CDMA2000 and WCDMA as global technologies for developed and emerging markets. Qualcomm has 3 great things going for it. One, they have solide growth from new subs and replacements in existing CDMA markets. Two, they have emerging markets in South America, China, and India ready to hit critical mass. Three, they have GSM/GPRS upgrade to WCDMA.

This will provide great long term growth.
