Gopher: While we are discussing hardware, anyone know anything about AMD notebooks? I am thinking of getting the Sony FX (Athlon MP1.2), which is $1800.

sonystyle.com

When I configured a Dell machine (P3 1.2) with the same features it came out at $2556.

Seems like a remarkable price difference. Where is the catch?

Which Dell model are you basing this on?

Going with the Inspiron 8100 and configuring it as close to the same as possible, I get a price of $2,217. One thing you may have overlooked is the warranty. Default for Dell's is a 3-year warranty, whereas Sony's is 1 year. Downgrading to a 1-year warranty will reduce the price by almost $200.

However, even then there are the following differences:

- The worst graphics you can get on the Dell Inspiron 8100 is a 16MB (DDR) GeForce2Go, whereas ATI's self-proclaimed "Powerful mobile graphics" consists of a RAGE Mobility M1 with 8MB SDRAM.

- The Inspiron comes with a free second battery, Sony's doesn't (that'll cost you $250, if you buy from Sony's site).

There are plenty of other, minor things (e.g. the Inspiron comes in a nylon carrying case - value around $20), but the two points above should help reconcile the major part of the price difference you found.

And then there's raw performance&#133 The Dell features a 1.2GHz P3-M chip (prefetching and 512kB L2 cache) on a 133MHz FSB, whereas the Sony features an Athlon4 (prefetching and 256kB L2 cache) on a 100MHz FSB.
