Computer Assoc. says Justice closes Sterling probe

biz.yahoo.com

NEW YORK, April 17 (Reuters) - Computer Associates International Inc. (NYSE:CA - news) said on Wednesday the U.S. Justice Department closed an inquiry into the company's acquisition of Sterling Software without taking action, a day after being told it was under yet another governmental investigation.

The news came after the close of the market Wednesday. In after-hours activity, shares of the world's No. 4 software maker traded at $20, after plunging almost 7 percent during the day to close at $18.49 on the New York Stock Exchange.

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department was not available for immediate comment. The Islandia, New York-based company declined to elaborate further.

On Tuesday, the Justice Department told the company it had opened an inquiry into its March 2000 acquisition of Sterling Software, which it bought for $4 billion.

The probe was similar to an earlier one involving Computer Associates' $3.5 billion purchase of rival Platinum Technologies in 1999, and led to the department filing suit against the company in September.

The company has been under investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York and the Securities and Exchange Commission for its past accounting practices.

The suit accused the company of being involved in decision-making for Platinum before an antitrust review was completed.
