I imagine that a lot of employees are less than thrilled to accept stock options in lieu of salary these day. I think the point of the article is that the changes in tax write-offs and the new accounting rules would wipe out much of the current paper net worth of many big tech companies, much like the S&L devaluation and bail out in the late 70s.
