1:55 (Dow Jones) When it comes to the computer industry, size does matter, which is why Buckingham Research analyst Jay Stevens supports the proposed merger of Hewlett-Packard (HWP) and Compaq Computer (CPQ). "In industries that become commodity oriented, unit volume is the key to success," he says. H-P is "very successful" in imaging and printing and if the merger wins shareholder approval, it would also be a major player in PCs and servers, he said. The analyst notes that a combined H-P and Compaq would outsource tens of million of units of PCs and printers, and should get "extremely low" manufacturing costs. Stevens said H-P is the only vendor offering a 64 -bit version of UNIX for use on Intel's new IA-64 chips, which will make it easy for Compaq UNIX customers to switch. Finally, Stevens said that at current prices H-P would be paying just over $20 billion for Compaq, which does about $33 billion in revenue. (DLF)

Yep, looks like some arbin' goin' on late in the day, probably on expectations that the ISS will render a decision as early as next week to recommend the merger.

I have no idea. CPQ just became extremely popular. I don't think it was shorts closing their positions. Lots of big buys on the NYSE. My guess is institutions filling out positions.
