BTW, after the U.S. Revolutionary War, Paine went over to France to engage in fomenting revolution. He managed to get caught, and while languishing in a French jail, he contracted tuberculosis. He wrote a letter to President Washington in order to seek a pardon. When the letter arrived, Washington tossed it in the wastebasket without even opening it. Washington had no use for a rabble rouser like Paine. Fortunately for Paine, VP Adams picked the letter out of the trash and took action. -Ray
