Another Intel design win for StrongArm and XScale !! The Momentum is building.... digitimes.com Asus to try hand at own-branded PDAs Charles Chou, Taipei; Noah Sauve, DigiTimes.com [Friday 22 February 2002] Asustek Computer will launch its first own-branded PDA (personal digital assistant) with a GPRS (general packet radio service) module in mid-April, said vice-president Tzeng Chien-sheng. The PDA will be equipped with Intel’s StrongARM 1110 processor, and run on the Pocket PC 2002 operating system. Asus will follow this up with the launch of a similar model using Intel’s new XScale processor in Q3. Tzeng noted that not all of their new PDA models will have built-in GPRS modules, but users will be able to enjoy GPRS functions by attaching an external module to the SD (secure digital) card slot. Intel’s new PXA250 and PXA210 XScale processors boast core computing speeds of 400 and 200MHz, respectively. With high performance ratings and low energy consumption, the XScale has already gained the support of Microsoft, as well as Taiwan’s High Tech Computer (HTC), Acer, Compal, Quanta, Wistron and PenPower Technology. Intel has already begun volume production of the XScale processor, which it expects to see in new hand-held IAs (information appliances) by mid-2002.
