Which cell phone carrier is best? (Or is CDMA any good?) That first question was explored in the 4/02 issue of Mobil Computing & Communications. They rated carriers, placing them into one of three categories: First Class, Business Class and Coach Class. Here's a quick ranking, along with some of their comments on voice quality.

First Class:

Company: Nextel
System: IDEN
Comment: average sound quality, fast data service, best for business users

Business Class :

Company: VoiceStream
System: GSM
Comment: crystal-clear calls

Company: Cingular
System: GSM, TDMA
Comment: great voice quality

Company: Sprint
System: CDMA
Comment: not as clear as the advertising would lead us to believe

CoachClass:

Company: AT&T
System: GSM, TDMA
Comment: Below-average sound quality

Company: Verizon
System: CDMA
Comment: good sound quality in NY and Chicago, lousy in LA.

As for data, each system was described as having "fast" access with the exception of Verizion which was said to have good WAP access in NY, and slow access in Chicago and LA.
