Chris, the stock market has forecasted "correctly" 10 of the last 5 recessions? (g). The 1987 meltdown was not even associated with a recession... I fear it is more complex than that, and includes a lot of internal dynamics which are connected to the macro economy only "loosely". I am in the camp that says we did not even have a real recession (two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth). Yet except for very short periods post May 2000, December 2000, Aril 2001 and September 2001, I have been mostly donning my bear suit. Sometimes, getting into the suit even prematurely, like late May 2001 and mid November 2001 (missed that last run from 1940 to 2100 or so).
