arun gera: Yes, the points you make are well taken. And I agree that the reason intra state rates are what they are is because of the "last mile" or "first mile" control the Bells have. And the Bells milk their customers where they have a lock on them.

This is why a company such as Verizon has an advantage over a company such as Sprint. Verizon has the bottleneck to make money from in wireline and has the wireless to make money on when (as I see beginning to happen) wireless goes to the residence through the air (by definition) and avoids that bottleneck. This will begin to be more clear in the next year and onward as data can flow wirelessly to the home.

AT&T is the potential basket case - except for its cable business.

Yet its "brand name" will give it a huge advantage for years and years. But the handwriting is on the wall for its long distance business.

The only point I am trying to suggest is that wireless will be one means of limiting the potential growth of wireline.

After all, we still listen to radio, so wireline is not going down and out. It will be with us for years, and as you say, it is certainly a major funnel for business communication and will continue to be.

That is why I try to follow both wire and wireless.

Best.

PS In China and India for example, you will probably see a combination of wireless and fiber, since much of the sunk infrastructure such as now exists in North America, Japan and Europe is not there. They have the advantage of building a modern/rational system to take advantage of both wire (fiber) and wireless where and how appropriate - if, and this is a big if, they have the vision, political and management will and ability to do so.
