What a pathetic record the Gardner Brothers (Motley Fool) have, both in terms of investment performance and ethical consistency.

They used to make much of the transparency in their reporting of their performance - and now they obscure the fact that their "Rule Breaker" portfolio is down over 60% from its all-time high in April 1999, and that the "Rule Maker" portfolio is down over 70% from its high, and that it is even down over 25% on the total of its invested capital. Where are the historical portfolio value charts that used to be on their website?

They used to emphasize do-it-yourself investing, and now they advocate using a fee-based manager in their affiliate network.

They used to boast of their results of their "real money portfolios" at every chance. Now they insist that their "model portfolios" are not to be emulated, that they are merely examples of what a person might do. I hope that their followers also have trust funds to fall back on.

They don't even update their commentary every day anymore... could it be that a bear market has fewer exciting, momentous days in it? Like those glorious days in 1996-1999 when new truths were being revealed daily, but only to those who "got it". When was the last time that they "got it"?

They now talk about diversification, when in fact they used to rail against it. In any case, their much-vaunted performance in the late 90s was due almost entirely to the performance of one stock, AOL.

Millenium Bear phase 3, the phase in which the gurus of the previous market cycle are thoroughly and definitively discredited, is approaching...

Mish, that was excellent. Your post is definitely something to pass around to every "true believer" who exists.

Thank you.
